Flickering Lightsaber Blades - File Description  

It's always nice when veteran modders return to the scene, so I'm very excited to review a new mod by my fellow staffer Mono_Giganto. To be frank the default saber's appearance sucked, and having just got a hold of some brand new game discs and starting this his game the author was immediately bothered by the lightsabers. So like any good modder does he has moved to fix this, so basically what this mod does is jazz that up! The lightsabers now pulse when they are activated, much like the lightsabers do in the original trilogy.

The mod is very well done and the Mono has also edited the textures which look much improved, the colours are now much more vibrant. The colours are also much more consistent as Mono has fixed the yellow lightsaber to actually being yellow opposed to the gold colour that it appears normally in game. I confess that I like these flickering lightsaber blades so much that they have earned themselves a permanent place in my Override. An added bonus with these textures is they should be compatible with lightsaber mods such as the Ultimate Lightsaber Mod and Oldflash's Hilts (I know it's definitely compatible with the latter as when I tested it, I also had that installed). Should you wish to tweak your lightsabers Mono has included a detailed readme of how he made this mod; All in all this is an excellent mod, and I recommend it highly.

DESCRIPTION: So, I've finally gotten ahold of a copy of The Sith Lords, and I had hoped I would be able to play through it at least once without having to modify anything. No dice. As soon as I built my lightsaber, I finally realized what always bugged me about them; they're totally static. So, I loaded up Photoshop and played around for about thirty minutes, and animated the blades. Now they flicker/pulse/throb when activated. I liked how it came out, so I thought I'd share it. I've included directions in this readme to explain how I did this, and how you can tweak it to suit your tastes.

In addition, this mod includes the following edits:
- Yellow lightsabers are now yellow, instead of gold.
- Orange lightsabers are now orange, as opposed to using the Heart of the
Guardian texture, which I've never been fond of.
- The error brightness with the viridian and silver blades that caused the
edges of the blade planes to be extremely noticable has been fixed, so your
silver lightsaber no longer looks like a bunch of rectangles.

I've included images of these changes.

I am still waiting on my K1 discs to arrive so I was unable to test this mod in K1; however, as far as I recall, the blade textures have the same names in K1, so this mod should work for both games.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: Open the archive and extract the files inside to your Override folder. If you are installing for The Sith Lords, you may need to make an Override folder yourself, if you have not already done so.

COMMENTS: First off, these should be compatible with any custom lightsabers that do not use custom textures.

Personally I find the effect that I've included to be pretty subtle, almost to the point of being unnoticeable at times. Since some people may want to edit the effect, I've included directions on what I did. Below is an example of a TXI file for one of the blade textures.

proceduretype cycle <- Tells the game to animate the texture
defaultwidth 128 <- Width of a single frame
defaultheight 128 <- Height of a single frame
numx 2 <- Number of columns
numy 2 <- Number of rows
fps 24 <- How many frames are played per second
blending additive <- These last two are in all lightsaber
decal 1 TXIs. Leave alone.

So, a few notes on this:

1. numx X defaultwidth should equal the width of your texture.
My texture has a width of 2 X 128 = 256px.
2. numy X defaultheight should equal the height of your texture.
My texture has a height of 2 X 128 = 256px.

These are useful if you want to add more frames to make the animation smoother. You probably won't notice them, though, to be honest.

3. fps is essentially a measure of how fast the animation cycles. Increase if
it's too slow for you; decrease this value if it's too fast.

BUGS: None that I'm aware of, since this is essentially just a texture edit.

PERMISSIONS: If you want to use this mod as a base to make your own custom colors, feel free to do so without asking me, just give me proper credit. If possible, please try to notify me, though; I like to keep track of when/where my mods are used. This mod may not be reuploaded to anywhere except KotOR Files without my consent.
