TSL Windows Vista Fix - File Description

Description:
As time goes on, Microsoft will continue to make and update their Windows operating systems. As technology keeps developing, new and supposedly improved operating systems will be released. When that happens, software and games get hit hard because they usually arenít compatible with the new operating system.

Over the summer I read a lot about how people were having trouble with operating Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords with Windows Vista. When it came time for me to get a new computer, I was dead set against getting Windows Vista because I didnít want to face the troubles many people were having and since Iím running KotorFiles, itís best that I have both of my Knights of the Old Republic games in good working order.

A Dead Jedi makes his FileFront debut with a patch that will help you play Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords on Windows Vista. Since Iím still running Windows XP, I have no way to test this out. The author has made a list in his readme file of people who have tested this file out, so youíre basically using this at their word. Iím sure people will leave feedback in the comments about how this patch works so read from other Windows Vista users to see if getting this is worth it.

Itís very important to read the readme file on how to use this. Enjoy the patch! big grin

Note: Please leave the author feedback, especially if you download this mod and use it. It really helps encourage the author to make more mods in the future.

-Shem

KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC II: THE SITH LORDS MODIFICATION

FILENAME:Kotor2 Windows Vista fix
FILE SIZE:364 KB
DATE RELEASED:12/28/07

DESCRIPTION:This is a fix for vista's annoying incapabilaty to play TSL without trying to start it about 5-9 times.
It turns out that while Kotor and TSL have the same file (windows aplication extention, very important), they were
made very differently from each other, and after cutting it open and gouging it, me and my friends were able to make
it almost exactly like the Kotor one (but not exactly the same).

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:Put this in your Kotor 2 main directory, not your override. It will ask to overwrite a file of the same name. Do it. (back up the original, though.)
If you don't have 7zip or winRAR, you can get the online for free (I recommend 7zip).

COMMENTS:If you have at least 1.5 GB of ram, I recomend you put it into XP service pack 2 compatabilaty mode.

BUGS: None that I know of. The file isn't used for modding, so it shouldn't conflict with your mods.
I can give a 99% compatabilaty as it will still crash, though not nearly as much. That's Vistas fault.

PERMISSIONS: If you would like do post this on another site go ahead, as I think everyone should have this. Just don't claim it as your own.

Teasters:Spider dude

This has been teasted on 3 different machines, including a 64-bit system, for those of you with Vista 64-bit.
It's compatable with Intel and AMD procesors, just so you know, though I don't know why it wouldn't. It has also been tested on both the
patched and unpatched versions for improved support, though you won't be able to patch it after this is instaled as the new file is different from the origonal.
Note: The game will still show the no CD/DVD message after patching under Vista 32-bit. Sorry, but that can't be fixed. Will work with patched 64-bit.
All you have to do is not patch the game under 32-bit.

THIS MODIFICATION IS PROVIDED AS-IS AND IS NOT SUPPORTED BY BIOWARE/OBSIDIAN ENTERTAINMENT OR LUCASARTS OR ANY
LICENSERS/SPONSORS OF THE MENTIONED COMPANIES. USE OF THIS FILE IS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND THE ABOVE MENTIONED COMPANIES
OR THE AUTHOR IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED TO YOUR COMPUTER FOR THE USAGE OF THIS FILE.

This wasn't really necessary really. There's already an mss32.dll out there that's used to make TSL run on Vista. However, this fix could probably be a bigger help for those who are technically un-savvy to google the mss32.dll....

Anyways, this will help the many out there... 10/10 big grin

It doesn't work for me... I have patched 32 bit Vista laptop, and it still crashes. I'm going to reinstall and not patch, and hopefully that'll work.

WOW! 171 downloads in less than a day! And to the guy above me, it states in the readme that it still wont work in patched 32-bit. It only works without the patch.

Look vista isn't that bad!!! I have it and I have NO problems with ANY games. Some games require some tweaking, but thats not to much to ask is it? And anyway you can't expect a new operating system to be 100% compatible, or it wouldn't be new would it?

I have Vista.

I'd be laughing so much if they came out with Kotor 3 for Vista only.
or any other star wars game you "Vista-Haterz" really want.

Plus, some time they will start making more games for Vista than XP and you people won't be saying Vista sucks anymore! =P

When the Windows 2000 came out it had problems like Vista, but it later became a very good OS for its time. The same thing will most likely happen with Vista. A lot of OS's have many problems when they come out and you guys just need to be a little patient.

I don't get why people don't think Windows Vista is good. It may be pretty bad in many cases (mostly because it's new and still not very many people have it). The problem is that it has a higher level of off-line security that you must set up for almost everything you use or disable from them one by one. Really it's not a problem because you only have to click something again. Also, many of the people that have a Windows Vista computer have Windows Vista Home Basic which is the lowest level of Vista. Check out this web site http://www.ibuypower.com and see what type of Windows all of their gaming computers use. This "mod" is a great use but sadly you can't patch the game again if you continue to use it. I used to hate Vista too but I learned much more about it and I say it's better than XP (which I used to have). I highly doubt this but for anyone who uses this without updating and it still doesn't work, it may be the Override files or a malfunction in uninstalling and instlling the game.

If you get Vista Ultimate you can disable the annoying, ever-pervasive security pop-ups, and with Directx10 and new drivers, Vista, as with all new OS's, when given time, will become more desirable than XP. It's how computer technology works!

Srry for double post, but as for "Ibuypower.com", mentioned by, "lococop", DO NOT BUY PCs from them! They are unreliable at best, and at worst, sometimes the OS is not even installed, or they ship the PC without a hardrive! They really are terrible. Alienware, , Falcon-nw, Dell, etc. are more trustworthy.

when i got both kotorgames for my vista computer, nothing bad happened. they both worked fine. same with my other xp computer games. Halo,GTA:SA, Battlefront 1&2, StarWars: BestofPc. Maybe, im just lucky. lol.

I hate when ppl say "vista sucks, its for losers."
well, they will be the losers when a game comes out that they really want but its for vista. I would be laughing so hard if Kotor3 came out, and it was for Vista only. muahahahahaaha!

Vista is the WORST user-friendly operating os EVER. This patch helps a little though, I hear. Vista makes modding IMPOSSIBLE! Kotor Tool doesn't run well on Vista either.Cry "Sigh" vista is just another microsoft pawn...

Does anyone know if the mac version of these games can be modded in the same fashion?

ok i just installed kotor 2 again, i ran the installation as administrator and then ran the program as administrator just to see if that would work, as that solution was posted on some sites, but of course it didn't work

then i downloaded this fix, backed up the original file and then replaced it,
it starts up fine and everything, the video, but then when the screen switches to t3-m4's view, its as if he's on a bad lsd trip, the colors are all messed up and the character models are white and change colors,!

i dont know what to do. it started up fine the very first time, then i quickly exit and spent like a whole day modding and adding stuff for my first play through on my new vista

but then the second time it crashed and i tried the different selections at the 'config' screen a number of times, trying to start it up, but 'no sound' sucks, and i also updated my drivers many times, i tried everything, if anyone knows the solution to the colors problem, please, i need your help

Just right click on your TSL desktop icon. Click on open file location. Your TSL directory should pop open.

Alrite thanks Dead Jedi, but ive gotten to another problem. I saved it rite after where u directed me to the kotor directory but it didnt give the option to replace the existing ddl file (not sure if its supposed to but it said in the installation instructions above). so after i saved it i tried to run kotor 2 again but its still giving me that bs msg about "kotor 2 is has stopped working" like it always does. Now am i supposed to open that ddl file download from winzip (i installed winzip for the ddl file) and extract it sumwhere or am i doing everything correct but it just wont work on my laptop?

Does this happen to anyone where their vista computer shuts down five minutes into the game play of every game? Does anyone know how to fix it?

Well I have Vista and I have played both games without trouble, well that is my computer. It is a eMachine. In my sister's, a Compact, it crashes all the time. Maybe it is because of the video card or something, but I am going to try this in it.

I'm in the process of buying a new computer, and a lot of the places I've been looking at, they don't offer anything but Vista. It irritates me. K1 and K2 are my favorite video games. I'd rather still be able to play them. Is it worth buying a new computer with Vista? I mean, will this mod work or am I gonna get screwed over?

I would like to notify all future downloaders and present downloaders that this fix is unecessary and, from what I have been seeing, does not work.

TSL does not work on Vista for one reason, the sound dll. And it can easily be fixed by simply replacing the Mss32.dll file in the kotor2 directory with the kotor1 one.

If you do not own kotor1, you can simply google "kotor2 sound dll" and download the file.

Thank you for listening.

I can`t belive that the site goes down, i was hopping to have Sleherion in my game, my mod was ready, i was getting Obsidian permit to my mod next week, (i needed it to make legal my mod because it has the TSL armors and other 179 armors), i say i can`t now make mods, this was the best modding community and we are out of it this monday. i can`t really belive it !! How is this possible?! Wath happened here?! Maybe i can move to gametoast.
And i can`t belive too that i show my first potd, is accepted, is good, and i have more, and they are a totally waste of time now, i was earlier at SWB2 and i never made a mod there so i come here 2 monts ago and i know now that this site is going to the junk, this site was the best and it always will be. So long....

Yeah, see title. Anyway, since the site is most definitely NOT dead, could it be possible for some help? My game will not load beyond the startup screen. I AM using Vista, not sure which bit, and have attempted running in compatibility mode. The error recieved is that it believes my video driver is out of date, when I have the most recent version along that line. Someone help, I want to be able to use the Restoration Pack in it's full glory.

if you can not get this to work you need to download the Kotor 2 patch 1.02b after you added the new mss32.dll file to you Kotor root folder. after I did that, it started right up for me. Reaper

(Note) I am runing Window's Vista......what a Pain haveing to go though all this to get Kotor 2 to run.

ok I just found out today after about 3 reinstall's and after a lot of looking on the web I found out......if you get a runtime error when you try to run Kotor2 like I was, you need to download the lastest directx the 9 version. after you patch the game add this fix. and it sould run. It now is for me Rock I just got done pulling all my hair out looking for a fix for the runtime error.

After the initial opening (Bioware, etc) and you get to the picture of Visas', Sion and Guy-Whos-Name-I-Can't-Spell it crashes - the KotOR II mouse pops up, but the normal windows Vista mouse is in the centre. Control, Alt and Delte reveals the message "This game has encountered an error and needs to close".

This always used to work for me until I tried it on this computer.

Any solutions?

I tried to play the game (installed normally, not Vista-way) and it says "Knights of...Sith Lords has stopped working" and sometimes it says that Data Execution Prevention has stopped this program. I then went into DEP settings and told it to not activate for swkotor2.exe. I was curious and right clicked the swkotor2.exe thing in the "select a program for DEP to ignore" window and told it to run. One out of ten times it will play the game. confused So I told swkotor2.exe to run in XP SP2 mode and it ran the first time but not anymore. What is going on? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall in Vista-way?

Ok, I have downloaded the above file and replaced the old mss32.dll with the new one. The game will play, allowing me to access the main menu, settings, etc. However when I start a new game, it allows me to customize my character and Force powers, etc., and shows me the opening scroll and Ebon Hawk spiraling towards Peragus. Then the game stops and a message appears saying, "Star Wars Knights...Sith Lords has stopped working" and options to essentially close the program are given. The program, acccording to my Task Manager, is not responding. What is going on and how can I fix this?

You do realise tat you can install XP ontoa vista machine by booting off of only the disk, tht way those who ae "doomed to vista" can go to XP, a spa in the clouds.

just checking.

Okay, so I get the abnormal runtime error whenever I try to start up my KOTOR2 game (running as normal, XP Service Pack 2 and otherwise)

I tried replacing the mss32.dll file from my KOTOR 1 but that didn't work, and I'm not great with computers or patching. I've tried using 7zip to open this file but it is not working.

I have tried multiple attempts with fixes and patches to get SW-KOTOW working, however all have failed to work; additionally, I have tried to set the compatability to Windows XP SP2 on the CD, launchers and shortcuts.

The problem I am having is after I open the game and the LucasArts splash screen appears, the screen then cuts to black for the BioWare splash screen to appear, but then it just switches back to Windows 7 with KOTOR "running" in the background.

The closest attempt I got to getting the game to run was when I used a patch and it got me to the main screen, but the arrow would not move.

Is anyone able to help me?

Additionally, does it matter if the game is installed in the Program Files or the Program Files (x86) directory?

Lol i have a windows 7 64-bit running kotor2 and i did the same thing on this one as vista 32-bit. Only one difference and i doubt it's it: at vista i was running as windows XP sp2 and at 7 im running as SP3.
Vista users download 1.3 fixed exe from here. if you downloaded the game and do not own the game then i don-t know *hint, search the website i gave, although i do not approve downloading*
To downloaders you will not be able to update the game m0002.gamecopyworld.com/.../pc_sw_knights_of_the_old_republic.shtml
With fixed exe they mean SECUROM new EXE hope you do know this exists xD
Hope it helps!

Hello, I put the folder in the Swkotor2 main folder (Right click on icon then click show in folder) It did not ask me to overwrite any other folders when I did this. I have not downloaded a patch either. When I started up the game I did notice that the resolution increased and the game screen got better and nicer looking. But right after the traditional star wars background info movie I heard the Ebon Hawk noises for about 1 second and then the game crashed as usual. What am I doing wrong?

Ok, so I've recently installed KOTOR 2 and added TSLRCM 1.8. It works great, I can hear the music and the dialogue, which is awesome. The issue is that whenever I speak to a member in my party, I can't hear their voice at all. Aarrrgh!! Anyone else have this issue?
