Basic modding for beginners

Okay everybody. I have been asked by many very many potential modders how to make a basic armor!

This I was struggling with it only a few months ago (I taught myself how to mod.)

*NOTE* this will only cover simple UTI disguises and textures. For more advanced modding I suggest Holowan labs.

Things you Need:

1) Kotor Tool
2) Corel or Jasc Paint Shop Pro/ Adobe Photoshop/ GIMP (not for noobies )

Okay first off the simple stuff for items

To edit a UTI file just follow these simple instructions i will make a new Jedi robe

1) Open Kotor tool and go to BIF's>Templates>Items>a_robe_08 (under either game.)

2) The file editor should open displaying your original item.

3) You should have "general, properties, description, comment" you can leave the

comment as it is really an add on to description.

4) General editing-Okay I will use the Kotor form of robes/items. For the ResRef and Tag

change it to a custom number over 30 I am going to use 74. So I change it from a_robe_08 to a_robe_72. you can use names as well like a_sith. Leave the base item as it was. You can change the cost to anything you like. Change the texture variation (if you are skinning an item, for advanced users only) to the same number you used for your name e.g. from 4 to 72.

5) Properties editing-Now I know this may look confusing but it is very easy. If you want to add new bonuses/penalties just click on the star to modify just click on that thick gray bar. Now you should come up to a new screen on the properties you have a variety of effects. I want a robe that will give a disguise of Darth Malak, protects 75% from fire and will regenerate me. I go to disguise and on the subtype i choose the template of the disguise. there are several options of people here. I go to "unique_jedi_malek" for the disguise. For the fire protection i go to damage immunity for the feat. For the sub i go to Fire. For the value i go to 75%. You are probably getting the hang of this now. For the regeneration i go to regeneration *obviously* . There is no subtype for regeneration cause there is only one way so that is blank. For the value i choose 3. It should display these bonuses/penalties in the table.

6) Description editing-Easy just change the no in {} to your ResRef's item number. e.g. if my robe is a_robe_74. I change it to {74}. If my item is a_robe_m16965. I change it to {m16965}. This won't really make a difference but it is easier for reviewers. Now in the identified description box add your items description.

7) Comment editing-Not needed but if you really have to it is simply a little add on to description

8) Saving your file-Now we have some fun! The best way to save it in a folder e.g. "Kotor 2 mods in progress" is the name i use. then make a subfolder for your mod. Save it as "ResRef".UTI e.g. if my ResRef is a_robe_74 i save it as a_robe_74.UTI.

9) Testing!-Now this is the best bit! Copy your file to override and in game, make cheats enabled and type the ResRef of your item with the GiveItem cheat e.g. "GiveItem a_robe_72" and equip your robe!

*NOTE* You can get an item through bodies and scripting (see this thread, my reply) for scripting.

Now I hope that everything has gone well. I not it is probably disguises or texture/model variations.
